2009 ENTRY

A chance to reflect on your teaching within an educational research community

The MA in Education addresses the career development needs of teachers and education professionals and provides practical solutions to problems faced in schools and other educational settings. The programme will help you to adopt best practice, promote innovation and manage change.

By returning to study at Liverpool Hope University, you will be joining an academic community with a strong record in educational research. You will study alongside fellow education professionals in a supportive learning environment and be encouraged to develop your own research profile. The programme allows you to investigate issues that affect your workplace, and to make a real difference to your school or organisation’s practice.

Study Details/Module Information

The first two modules are Practitioner Inquiry and Research (PIR) 1 and 2. To complete the taught modules you will choose two from a range including Leadership in Education, Children’s Rights and Services, Mentoring in Schools, Modern Foreign Languages, and Language in the Curriculum. Other subject specific modules are available subject to numbers. Additionally, modules such as Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring or Continuing Professional Development can be added to your MA credits.

Professional qualifications can be added to your portfolio of credits too, such as NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Headship), which, with some additional reflection, is equal to two modules or 60 credits.

At the start of the programme you will be introduced to research methodologies to be employed when enquiring into practice in your workplace. The dissertation element will allow you to explore a particular question or issue with the close supervision of a member of the Education team.

The Education Deanery also offers the opportunity for qualified teachers to study for a range of postgraduate certificates which can be added to their MA profile.

Research Environment

Teaching is informed by the research interests of Education Deanery staff at Liverpool Hope University, including Professors Peter Clough, Jon Nixon, Rosemary Kilpatrick and Bart McGettrick. A particular area of research strength is professional learning, pedagogy and education. Members of the team also support interdisciplinary research projects in Learning & Teaching and Learning Technologies, and the Centre for Higher Education Research & Development.

 Career Opportunities

The award of MA in Education will enhance your career opportunities and your potential for promotion to senior management.  It will enable you to evaluate children's learning through research and postgrauate study.

It will also enhance opportunities to become an 'excellent teacher' as you will have demonstrated excellent and innovative pedagogical practice through investigation of your educational establishment.  You will also have experience of using local and national statistical data as a basis for improving teaching and learning.
