Programme Overview

Liverpool Hope University’s newMaster in Business Administration (Information Technology), or MBA(IT), offers students the opportunity to develop expertise in Business and Management with a specific focus on their application to Information Technology.

The programme has been designed to address and bridge the “digital divide” that exists within many organisations between managers with little awareness of technical issues on the one hand, and technical personnel who tend to focus on technology so having little awareness of management issues, on the other,. The programme provides a balanced set of courses from the both the Computer Science and the Business subject areas.

Study details / Module information **

The MBA(IT) programme offers a balanced mix of Business, Management, Computer Science and IT modules. Students will study a core set of modules covering topics such as Strategic Management of IT and Management Strategy. In addition, as the programme has been designed to allow students to focus their studies on either management or technology, they will be able to select from a range of modules such as Knowledge Management; IT Project Management and e-Business.

The programme combines academic and practical modules, consisting of 8 taught modules (6 compulsory, 2 electives) and a dissertation (final research project), adding up to 180 credits. You will be assessed for each module. Assessment methods may include practical coursework, essays, reflective reports, presentations, a project proposal and a dissertation.

Research Environment

The Department of Computer Science brings together multi-disciplinary research interests and substantial experience and expertise in the field of Computer Science and Informatics. Its aim is to facilitate research into Intelligent and Distributed Systems, Computer Simulation and Modelling, Data Engineering, Operations Research, Bioinformatics, Software Engineering, Human Computer Interactions (HCI), and Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW). In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), 60% of the research submitted by the Department was judged to be of ‘international recognition and excellence’. The Department’s commitment to research includes an on-going research seminar and conference programme with speakers from around the globe; a state-of-the-art research facility, the Intelligent and Distributed Systems (IDS) laboratory; and opportunities for PhD bursaries for outstanding postgraduate students with demonstrated research potential.

Hope Business School is renowned forthe quality of its teaching and research, and its supportive learning environment. Hope believes in research informed teaching and our research expertise encompasses three main areas: economic and social development; leadership, learning and organisational change; and international business and management. Liverpool Hope has a number of research institutes, including the Liverpool Hope-Christ University (Bangalore) Institute of Business, Management and Leadership. The Institute is focused on collaborative research projects, particularly in the areas of SME management and leadership, cross cultural influences on corporate social responsibility, professional leadership issues, and marketing.

Graduates will have developed Business and Management, and IT related analytical skills which are highly valued in the manufacturing, science, engineering and technology industries, as well as IT and related business industries.
Graduate will gain skills that are transferable to a range of careers, including management, research and development, and consultancy roles. In addition, the course provides an excellent foundation for further postgraduate research study through PhD studies.

  • Entry criteria: A good degree (minimum of 2.2 or equivalent) in Science, Engineering and Technology, Business and Information Technology based discipline and a minimum of two years relevant work experience; OR highly relevant industrial experience equivalent to degree level, and analytical aptitude.
  • English language requirement: The programme is taught in English. Students whose first language is not English are normally required to have an IELTS 6.5 (reading 6, writing 6), TOEFL paper based 560, TOEFL ibt 83 or other equivalent recognised English language qualification.
