Postgraduate Research at Liverpool Hope University

student in libraryWe offer the opportunity for students to study for a research degree in an academic environment which values excellence in research and scholarship. Increasing numbers of students are choosing to come to Hope to undertake research degrees in wide variety of subject areas, and also become part of a stimulating, supportive academic community.

Our research students come from around the world and contribute to both the research environment and broader aspects of student life at Hope. Students choose to study for MPhil and PhD degrees on a full-time or part-time basis. Plans to expand our research degree portfolio are taking place, particularly with a view to the introduction of a Masters by Research degree and a Doctorate in Ministry (DMin).

Research students at Liverpool Hope work within a university which supports and is expanding research opportunities for students and staff. Liverpool Hope works closely with external research partners who include other universities, businesses and communities.

What opportunities are there for postgraduate research?

Postgraduate research opportunities are available across a range of disciplines in arts and humanities, business and computing, education, humanities and sciences and social sciences. If you have research interests which are not listed but you would like to study at Hope, please contact us to discuss the possibilities which might be open to you.

Prospective Students from the US/Canada

Liverpool Hope Department of Theology and Religious Studies welcomes interest from US/ Canada in the possibility of working for a PhD programme in our subject area. The person to contact at Liverpool Hope University is Prof. Mary Mills and the contact in your home region is Prof. Irving Hexham. We are able to offer supervision in the areas of Christian Theology, Church History and tradition, Religion and Society.

Who awards the degrees?

Research degrees are awarded by Liverpool Hope University. All procedures for admissions, annual monitoring, progression and graduation for Hope research students are carried out by the Postgraduate Research Office at Liverpool Hope.

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants should normally possess:

EITHER a First Class Honours Degree from a UK University,

OR a Second Class Honours Degree and a Masters degree with Merit or Distinction from a UK University;

OR a Second Class Honours Degree from a UK University and a Masters degree from a UK University that does not offer awards with Merit, the Registrar having confirmed that the profile of marks awarded by that University satisfies or exceeds Liverpool Hope University’s requirements for the award of a Masters degree with Merit;

OR an equivalent qualification from outside the UK

Applicants must be competent in English as a spoken and written language and all applicants must have a minimum Grade C in GCSE English or equivalent. For international students the minimum requirement is IELTS Academic 6.0 including 6.0 in reading and writing or TOEFL 560 or equivalent.

Applicants for the Professional Doctorate programme are also expected to have at least 3 years experience of leadership in a professional area relevant to the programme of study.

How do I apply?

Students are welcome to contact Liverpool Hope with a research proposal at any time of the year in order to start discussions about the potential viability of their project.

2009/10 ENTRY

MPhil and PhD research degrees are awarded by Liverpool Hope University and can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. The EdD is availble for part time study only.

Liverpool Hope attaches great value to the culture and outcomes of scholarship, and is actively committed to supporting students and staff engaged in research enquiry. We are always looking for ways to expand our research portfolio, and currently have plans under development to introduce courses such as a Masters by Research degree, and a Doctorate in Ministry (DMin).

The University works closely with external research partners which include other universities, businesses and communities. We hold research seminars in all subject areas which, alongside inaugural lectures and presentations by visiting professors, contribute to an interesting and varied postgraduate research environment.

The Alexander Jones Research & Postgraduate Centre provides facilities for research students to study and relax.

What are the supervisory arrangements?

All research students are allocated at least two supervisors, normally from Liverpool Hope. Supervisors provide guidance and support throughout your period of study.

How long does it take to complete a PhD/MPhil?

PhD
[a]     Full-time students shall normally submit their thesis after a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years from initial registration.
[b]     Part-time students shall normally submit their thesis after a minimum of four years and a maximum of six years from initial registration.

MPhil
[a]    Full-time students shall normally submit their thesis after a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years from initial registration.
[b]    Part-time students shall normally submit their thesis after a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years from initial registration.

EdD
The EdD programme is available by part-time study. It takes a minimum of four years to complete. During the first phase of the programme (years one and two) students are expected to attend three residential study weekends each year (six in total). 

Other features of postgraduate research

All MPhil and PhD students are required to complete a programme of research skills development before they can submit their thesis. The programme offers a mixture of subject-specific and generic research training, as well as a range of transferable skills. Constituent components include key elements such as research skills and career skills development. The programme is individually tailored for each student and may include research seminars and events based at Liverpool Hope as well as nationally arranged events such as Vitae UK schools/conferences, at which students can meet researchers from other institutions and develop their own skills.
