Department of Theology, Philosophy and Religious Studies
Welcome to the webpage of the Department of Theology, Philosophy and Religious Studies. We are very proud of our Department which is comprised of internationally recognised scholars who are simultaneously dedicated teachers. We offer a broad range of programmes on the undergraduate and graduate levels, and we house a number of specialised research centres. The Department has a special charge to reflect the distinctive nature of Liverpool Hope University’s ecumenical foundation.
What distinguishes the Department of Theology, Philosophy, and Religious Studies is its contextualized seeking of meaning and truth as human existence is related to and has attempted to relate itself to transcendence, which as such is inherent in no other department of the University.
The fundamental interdisciplinarity of the Department in combining Theology, Philosophy, and Religious Studies further distinguishes the Department from all other individual departments of Theology, or Philosophy, or Religious Studies internationally. This recognition is a fundamental component of the Department’s mission.
The programmes offered here are of the highest academic standard, while the culture within the department is one of nurturing and support. In the most recent National Student Survey, the Department was ranked amongst the top universities in the UK in terms of student satisfaction. We are an ambitious Department and appreciate your interest.
The Department of Theology, Philosophy and Religious Studies has a long-established and successful record of research, with research ranked as world leading on the 2008 RAE.
Andrew F. Walls Centre for the Study of Asian and African Christianity
Centre for the Applied Study of Muslims and Islam in Britain
Institute of Pastoral Theology
Other areas of research strength include Augustinian Studies, Jewish Studies, Wesleyan Studies, and the Continental Philosophy of Religion.
As a Department of Theology, Philosophy and Religious Studies, we are embedded in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities and base our teaching on the convictions that lie at the heart of the Liberal Arts. The Faculty combines the highest level of international research with a personal, ‘hands on’ approach to teaching the textual, historical, social, intellectual, religious and political dimensions of Christian Theology, World Religions, and the Philosophy of Religion.
We are unique in Europe in being the only interdisciplinary department built upon an ecumenical foundation. We have a noted speciality in the Continental Philosophy of Religion and the Hope-based Association for the Continental Philosophy of Religion is a unique institution within the general field of philosophy, which has established a growing international reputation. The department, moreover, has close working relations with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese and with the Church of England Diocese.
