Applied Exercise Physiology (MSc)*

Duration: 12 months (full-time); 24 months (part-time)

Overview

* 2017 entry only subject to validation

Our MSc in Applied Exercise Physiology involves a systematic examination of key applied fields in exercise physiology such as exercise testing, nutrition, training and rehabilitation.  Taught by internationally recognised experts in the field you will benefit from a teaching approach that asks you to question prevailing wisdom and gain practical laboratory experience with a wide range of techniques to measure physiological parameters using state of the art equipment. An MSc in Applied Exercise Physiology will provide you with an excellent basis from which to enter a career in clinical exercise science, work within professional sport or develop your own business in supporting amateur and elite sports performers alike to realise their goals.

Why choose Liverpool Hope?

  • Taught by internationally recognised researchers in the field and applied practitioners
  • State of the art equipment
  • Unique campus experience with small class sizes

For further information download the Applied Exercise Physiology MSc Leaflet

Curriculum

This programme will enable you to develop a critical appreciation of the application of principles of exercise physiology

The curriculum will comprise:

  • Exercise Energetics and Metabolism
  • Exercise Testing and Physiological Assessment in Elite Performance and Clinical Populations
  • Exercise and Health
  • Exercise Training and Rehabilitation
  • Sport & Exercise Nutrition
  • Applied Practice in Exercise Physiology
  • Independent Research Project

Entry Requirements

Normally a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours Degree in a relevant subject such as Sports Science, Exercise Science or similar.

Applications from students who do not hold a 1st or 2:1 Honours Degree (or equivalent) will be asked to demonstrate potential to achieve a Masters award via a sample of academic writing and interview before an offer is made.

Teaching & Research

We foster an informal learning environment where students are encouraged to challenge the taught material and accepted dogma.  You will gain a systematic understanding of the taught areas and learn to develop coherent and cohesive arguments, working from a research evidence base.  As the title suggests, application of understanding is central to the philosophy of the programme.  As a result, you will gain practical experience of a number of relevant techniques such as electrocardiography, echocardiography, laser Doppler flowmetry, near infrared spectroscopy and electromyography.

Employability

Applied exercise physiologists work in a range of career settings.  In public health settings, some work with clinical populations to measure fitness in order to help make decisions about future treatment plans and to improve fitness for the benefit of their quality of life.  Alternatively, many go on to work within an elite or professional sport setting, monitoring performance in competition and training, quantifying the training load and helping to make decisions on training and rehabilitation programmes.  An MSc in Applied Exercise Physiology is also an excellent basis from which to develop your own business plan supporting amateur and elite sports performers in their needs for nutrition, training and rehabilitation plans.
