Education Faculty
The Faculty is underpinned by a commitment to education as a means of humanising society. We seek to form and transform students into educators, people committed to education as a way of improving society. We welcome students and scholars who wish to serve others through education in schools or other educational settings in the UK or overseas.
The Faculty of Education has a long and proud tradition of excellence in Teacher Education and Training stretching back to 1844. Whilst Initial Teacher Education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level is still an important and highly valued part of our work, the Faculty has expanded to provide a range of activities that highlight the importance of education in its widest sense.
The faculty has expertise in the areas of Early Childhood Studies, in Childhood and Youth Studies, in Special Educational Needs and Disability Studies. In addition to this the Faculty is proud of its commitment to the foundation disciplines of education, with experts in the history, philosophy, sociology and psychology of Education
The Dean and Staff of the Faculty of Education at Liverpool Hope University extend a warm welcome to all visitors to this website.

Research in the Education Faculty is organised into five centres and one institute:
These groupings place research and scholarly activity at the centre of all Faculty work. All members of Faculty academic staff and research students identify in the first instance with one of these research centres and institute. These structures support research-active staff through ongoing research mentoring, emphasis on research-informed teaching, and readily-available research support.
Educational Research at Hope University is the research compendium of the Faculty of Education at Liverpool Hope University. It communicates the diversity and quality of research effort emanating from the collaborative research culture within the Faculty. The research and development work described therein is the product of individual and team efforts of students and academic staff.
Education Research at Hope is an annual publication celebrating the collective effort of academic staff, their colleagues and their research students in the Faculty of Education.
The inaugural volume of this publication, Educational Research at Hope Volume 1 January, 2013, contains forty (40) thumbnail descriptions of recent, current and ongoing research projects. It also contains descriptions of the research orientation of the faculty, the research centres, the research institute, and the special interest group that lead the research in specific discipline areas. The framework for supporting a developing research culture in the Faculty: Towards a Renewed Research Strategy, is also described.
The Education Faculty works in close partnership with 200 primary and secondary schools throughout Greater Merseyside as well as parts of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester.
The quality of education for Qualified Teaching Status is dependent upon the valuable work carried out in schools. Therefore schools are involved in all stages of the management and delivery of the courses; awards management, steering groups, working parties, interviewing, lecturing, assessment, quality assurance of mentoring.
For more information about School Partnerships, visit Moodle in the My Hope section of the Student/Staff Gateway.
The Education Faculty also works in close partnership with a wide range of organisations and educational settings in the voluntary and statutory sectors, throughout Greater Merseyside as well as parts of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester.
These partnerships have developed out of, and provide opportunities for, students studying degree subjects in the Deanery to undertake work placements. This enables them to make important links between academic theory studied as part of their course and professional practice.
Community partnerships represent the diverse range of educational provision and education issues studied by our students. They include links with the following:
The Education Faculty has partnerships with a number of institutions and organisations in other countries, particularly those who share Hope’s mission and commitment to providing high quality education in the round.
Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Liverpool Hope University and St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, the Education Deanery is seeking to establish a joint research institute with this prestigious Indian college of higher education.
The Education Faculty has been working closely with a number of educational organisations in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, including Nord Anglia, SABIS and GEMS. Through these partnerships we hope to support the continuing professional development of teachers in both International and Indian schools in the Middle East to ensure high quality of educational provision.
As part of the enhanced first-year curriculum for Primary Teacher Education and Education Studies, the Faculty of Education is now working in partnership with the national charity The Reader Organisation, to offer an exciting project that is the first of its kind in an institution of Higher Education.
Hope Readers is a three-year reader-in-residence project, whereby each first-year student in the Faculty of Education attends a weekly Get Into Reading group in addition to their academic classes. Get Into Reading is about re-discovering that pure pleasure and enthusiasm in reading that is sometimes forgotten or lost for various reasons at some points in life. Groups work on the basis of a shared reading of a text be it a novel, short story, poetry or drama. Trained facilitators lead the group by reading aloud and initiating discussion, which group members may contribute to, or not, as they wish.
Hope Readers was commissioned by Vice Chancellor Professor Pillay because he feels that this meaningful, personal form of reading is an incredibly important practise for students in any educational setting where emphasis is put upon the development and roundedness of the individual. Hope Readers supports the faculty’s belief in education as a ‘deeply human endeavour,’ by providing deep, personal discoveries for the students who participate in Get Into Reading, and by giving them a genuine appreciation of reading which will be transferred to those around them in their future lives.
The Hope Readers project also offers students with numerous opportunities to get involved with extra-curricular activities, such as training to lead a reading group, which can be undertaken as part of the University’s Service and Leadership Award, and volunteering to help organise events and campaigns.
"I have a huge list of books that I want to read back at home, but because of the demands of my course, I never get round to them... So it's great to be able to just come here very week and sit for an hour and read. I don't feel like I'm missing-out on reading now... so thanks!" - First-year PTE student on their Get Into Reading group.
