Piano Testing

Today saw the long awaited arrival of 10 new Steinway pianos to Hope’s Capstone building. The arrival required lots of planning and a crane to help hoist the grand piano up over the balcony and into the state of the art theatre widely believed to be the best sounding room in Liverpool. Rosanna and I also managed to catch the nail biting action on film so keep posted for a video of it soon.

Staff and students alike turned out to welcome the musical additions and the excitement could be felt in the air as one student commented “these are like the Rolls Royce of pianos, I never thought in my wildest dreams I would get to play one in my life and now Hope has 10!”

Careers Department…

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Hello all,
This week I’m going to be blogging twice hopefully. This one is to shout about the excellent careers people, and the other will be a Cornerstone fashion blog. Also, as you can see below, is a photo of the newly finished capstone theatre! You can see more on our facebook page.

So, to it. Last week I made an appointment to see the careers department

in the Gateway building. This was mainly because I’m in my third year (as regular readers will know) and am pretty scared about what happens once I graduate. I’ve been looking at jobs, but wasn’t really sure where to start with a CV that wasn’t aimed at bar or shop work. Luckily for me though, I was pointed in the direction of the daily drop-in sessions that the careers department have in the afternoon on a weekday.

I made an appointment, and was seen a couple of days later at a time that was convenient for me. The meeting lasted about half an hour, but if I had needed longer, they would have sorted the out as well. I was shown to some handy resources, like mock CVs in different styles, which provided a really good template for my own. The staff were friendly, and didn’t make me feel silly for not knowing what to do, which was good!

I wrote my CV, and then went back for a follow-up appointment, where I was guided on what to change and make better, as well as given a huge list of websites and businesses that are involved in graduate employment. I know it sounds like I’m selling the Careers department, but honestly, they were so nice and helpful that I’d recommend a visit to anyone, even if you’re just looking for part time work – it’s how I got my job as a campus journalist!

The Capstone packs a punch, of theatrical proportions.

Mud, diggers and builders is enough to get anyone curious so imagine my luck then when I was invited past the fence divide and into the new Capstone building. Just when I think it couldn’t get better, I get told to wear a hardhat, builder boots and fluorescent jacket. Doesn’t fancy dress just make everything more fun?

The new building is due to open in March and boasts ten music practise rooms, recording studio, control rooms and teaching rooms combining to make an educational haven for music lovers. The jewel of the Capstone crown is undoubtedly the state of the art performance space Hope Theatre. Which, quite literally, made me WOW! With nearly 300 seats and created with sound perfection in mind it is believed to be the best sounding room in Liverpool.
