PGCE Study

PGCE Primary and Secondary Study opportunities

Liverpool Hope University offers two main pathways into teaching. If you are already a graduate, you may be eligible to enrol for the one year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) which is offered both for Primary teaching and for a range of Secondary subjects.

Alternatively, there are undergraduate routes for prospective primary teachers. We have undergraduate degrees which lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and other degree courses in related subjects which are a great base from which to complete a PGCE, please go to http://www.hope.ac.uk/prospective/undergraduate-courses-2012

Liverpool Hope strives to provide opportunities for teacher training to all and is committed to encouraging recruitment and supporting retention of trainees from a black or minority ethnic background.

All PGCE courses at Liverpool Hope University comprise an integrated programme of theory and practice.  Initial Professional Development focuses on all those issues which underpin the work of an effective teacher and includes strategies for delivering the curriculum.  This part of the course is delivered through a range of media including lectures, seminars, directed reading and research, and online discussion forums.

You will be assigned a University-based professional tutor who will work with you as you learn.  Tutors with specific subject specialisms will help you to develop your knowledge and understanding of how to teach curriculum subjects.  For student teachers on Secondary courses this will be a single subject.  For those on PGCE Primary programmes you will learn how to teach across the whole primary curriculum with emphasis on the Foundation Stage or National Curriculum as appropriate to your chosen age range.

School placements offer you the opportunity to put theory into practice.  You will undertake work experience in at least two schools where, with the support and guidance of specially training school-based mentors and University tutors, you will apply your University-based learning to the school environment and support of children's learning.
