Academic Support and Study Skill

Academic Support and Study Skill

PG studentAs a new postgraduate student, not only are you raising your learning to a higher level, but also you will need to gain a good understanding of the UK education system. You will develop a new range of skills including, commitment and communication skills, high level academic writing, independent thought and critical analysis, time-keeping and organisation ability, and reflection on yourself as a learner.

In order to make this transition constructive and enjoyable, Liverpool Hope University as a range of academic support and study skills services.

1. Support from your academic subject

Every lecturer at Hope is committed to excellent teaching. Every subject has small group teaching sessions which allow you to get to know a specific member of staff who will be your point of contact for academic guidance.   They will work with you and encourage you to think about how you learn best, and how you can use this understanding to achieve your full potential. He/she will help you to make links between different areas of your studies, other areas of your life (such as work, membership of organisations, travel etc) and to reflect critically upon your achievements.

2. Personal academic support

At Hope we know that sometimes you need support which is different to that offered by your academic subject or that you would like to talk to someone who is not directly associated with your academic studies. For exactly this reason we have a team of Faculty personal tutors who are available every day from 9am to 5pm. They can offer you generic academic support, guidance on the regulations, advice on attendance or simply a listening ear. They can also point you to other sources of support in the University. We also have a group of Faculty Senior Academic Advisors.   Their role is help students who need very specialist advice about their studies. This might be in terms of progression through your degree, choosing your future courses or transferring between subjects.

3. Virtual Learning Environment

In order to enhance your learning experience many subjects at Liverpool Hope make use of Moodle, a web-delivered Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). This provides access to learning materials outside of the normal taught sessions and contains a range of tools to help you with your studies. When used in conjunction with traditional face-to-face teaching, Moodle provides you with further opportunities to develop your subject skills and knowledge.

4. The Student Success Zone

PostgradThe Student Success Zone offers flexible study spaces to complement the study facilities in The Sheppard-Worlock Library; these spaces are located on the first floor of the Gateway Building, the ground floor of the FML Building (both at Hope Park) and the Writing Suite at The Creative Campus.

Each space has a slightly different ‘feel’ to appeal to learners of all types and provide ideal settings to work on the broad range of assignments (both individual and group-based) you will engage in.  IT resources such as wireless network access, printing, laptop loan and networked PCs are available too, with the facilities varying at each location to fit with the each area’s unique ‘feel’.

To complement this study space the Student Success Zone has developed a range of resources to support the development of the skills you’ll need to be a successful student. These resources were developed through two high profile Government-funded projects called LearnHigher and Write Now (both Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning). The resources can be accessed via the Student Success Zone website and via the Virtual Learning Environment
