Liverpool Hope University's Biodiversity Group

Print E-mail

Bee orchidThe Biodiversity Group has been developed by students on the Service and Leadership Award in conjunction with university staff. It aims to promote biodiversity and sustainable practises on campus and to work with external agencies in achieving these aims.

In association with North Merseyside Biobank, the biological records centre for our region, the group has set up a biological recording scheme for the campus. Knowledge of the biodiversity on campus adds to its value. In addition, the records will be submitted to BioBank and from there to the national Biological Records Centre, thus contributing to the understanding of biodiversity distribution and change.

All members of the university are encouraged to send any observations of wildlife on campus (plants, birds, insects, mammals, fungi etc.) to the group.

National Wildlife Week 2010 photography competition

To commemorate the start of National Wildlife Week, a photography competition took place on Monday 15th March, jointly organized by the Service and Leadership Award's Biodiversity group and the Liverpool Hope University Photographic Society.  Lynn Hilditch gave a short talk on photography skills and Sally Edmondson gave a short talk on the wildlife to look out for on campus. A group of staff and students took their cameras around Hope Park to get close up to the natural habitats and the wildlife that is abundant on campus. The results of the competition, judged by Lynn Hilditch and Chris Langton, can be viewed here.
