Service and Leadership Award
The Service and Leadership Award was launched in September 2008 and is closely linked to the work of the University’s overseas educational activity, Global Hope. The award builds upon over 25 years of engaging staff and students as volunteers with Hope’s community partners, both local and overseas. The award is an extra-curricular programme and has been designed to recognize the value of service work and provides students with appropriate preparatory, reflective and leadership training. The Service and Leadership Award promotes global citizenship and is a way of engaging students with issues of social justice. It is a direct enhancement to a degree and is suitable for students who want to make a difference to society.
The Liverpool Hope Service and Leadership Award is offered as an extra-curricular programme involving service-based experiences, development of leadership potential and the equipping of students for a career in a rapidly changing world. It is a direct enhancement to a degree, i.e. something which is complimentary but different and which has a distinct ‘value-added’ component. It is for those who particularly want to make a difference in this world, to be involved in the development of a moral and ethical society and to gain an understanding of social justice.
The award runs alongside student’s degree and gives recognition of service work they have performed. The award is structured with carefully with leadership training, preparation for their service work and reflection on their experiences as compulsory elements. The main part of the award is the service itself. Students undertake a wide variety of service work, within the University, in the local community, serving Northwest region or national organisations and in some cases on our range of international ‘Global Hope’ projects.

Global Hope
Introduction to Global HopeLiverpool Hope University’s award winning overseas charity was given its new name ‘Global Hope’ at a celebratory launch in February 2009. The launch provided a special occasion to mark not only the charity’s enhanced profile and activities, but also the widening involvement of students and staff in the newly established Service and Leadership Award. Through the Service and Leadership Award, Global Hope will continue the strong links with its traditional partners such as SOS Children’s Villages UK, the Tibetan community in India, the Sisters of Notre Dame, Mountains of the Moon University and Missao Ramacrisna. New collaborative projects will be developed with other organizations and groups as Global Hope’s service and community work evolves.
Global Hope’s Vision
Over the years, Hope has been able to support a range of educational communities in locations as diverse as India, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Malawi, South Africa, Brazil, Romania and Uganda. A highlight for the University and many Global Hope partners was the ‘Big Hope’ in June 2008, a Global Youth Congress which enabled many colleagues from overseas to be involved with educational and related activities at Liverpool Hope University. The University is proud of its reputation as a provider of dynamic students and staff for its work with overseas partners. As a mark of quality, recruitment for Global Hope projects is solely from students undertaking the Service and Leadership Award. Students who are chosen to participate on Global Hope projects are provided with training on cultural issues, health and safety abroad, dimensions of poverty and planning for overseas projects. Each year, staff and students are mentored by staff and students who have been on previous projects. Global Hope is spreading good, modern and relevant educational practise through the involvement of a range of dynamic, innovative and motivated staff with estimable scholarly expertise and achievements. On a day to day basis, the Global Hope team work to secure projects, to raise funds, to organize travel, to train the students, to induct staff, to ensure health and safety standards have been met and finally to send off (and importantly, receive home) happy and healthy teams. Global Hope is looking forward to continually supporting current partnerships and to expand to meet new challenges with new partners in many new locations.
