I am Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics Education. I lead and teach on the PGCE Mathematics course, the pre-ITT Mathematics Enhancement Course, and the Mathematics Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course for serving teachers. I led the undergraduate Mathematics degree pathway for 12 years. I am also involved in primary mathematics education.
After gaining an MA in Mathematics from the University of Oxford in the mid 1980’s, I went on to complete a PGCE and began a career in secondary teaching. I taught in three schools and a sixth form college in the northwest of England, and was Head of Mathematics in two of the schools. In 1997 I moved to Liverpool Hope, and have since then taught on a variety of mathematics and mathematics education courses, and served on management groups.
My research interest is the nature of subject knowledge for teaching in secondary mathematics, and this was the the focus of my doctoral thesis. I am a member of a research team led by Prof Jill Adler of Kings College, London, investigating the nature of mathematics subject knowledge held by students on Mathematics Enhancement courses.
In my spare time I am involved in the running of a small educational charity, and this work has taken me to various locations in India, offering educational support to schools in disadvantaged communities. I enjoy running, hill-walking and skiing, overseas travel, and the company of good friends!
