My academic background lies in Theology and Education. I studied an MA in Catholic Religious Studies in the USA from 1997-2000 before gaining a doctorate from University of Liverpool in 2011. My PhD thesis examined pedagogies of online learning and their application for Roman Catholic adult education. Key issues surrounding community and authority were addressed and empirical evidence included findings from online faculty and student bodies. The concept of ‘interruptive pedagogy’ was proposed as an interpretative model to appraise and promote online learning for future Catholic education. My research interests cover the following areas: theology and philosophy of Catholic education, Catholic schools, faith development, teacher continuing professional development, relationship between theology and education, adult education theory, and educational technology, especially online learning.
At Liverpool Hope University I lead the Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies Online, a national course on behalf of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, recommended for teachers in Catholic schools and others seeking theological formation. I also teach on the undergraduate Education Studies course and contribute to Education Faculty Graduate School through teaching and supervision. Recent research activity includes a USA conference presentation on 'Interrupting Pedagogy for 21st Century Online Education' and a paper for Liverpool Hope University Centre for Christian Education summer conference. Publications include Stuart-Buttle, R. (2011). 'Communicating Faith and Online Learning' in J. Sullivan (Ed.), Communicating Faith, Washington, D.C.: The Catholic University of America Press. Forthcoming publications include a journal article 'Interrupting Pedagogy: Christian Education Online' (under review) and 'Virtual Theology, Faith and Formation' (book contract with Cambridge Scholars Publishing). My research and consultancy includes working with other academic institutions (I am visiting lecturer for Heythrop College BA/FD in Pastoral Mission) and Catholic dioceses across England & Wales and other faith bodies.
