I am pathway leader for undergraduate Mathematics and I also teach on the Mathematics Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course for serving teachers, the MA Education (Mathematics Teaching and Learning), the pre-ITT Mathematics Enhancement Course, and the PGCE Mathematics course. After gaining an MA in Mathematics from the University of Oxford in the mid 1980’s, I went on to complete a PGCE and began a career in secondary teaching. I taught in three schools and a sixth form college in the northwest of England, and was Head of Mathematics in two of the schools. In 1997 I moved to Liverpool Hope, and have since then taught on a variety of mathematics and mathematics education courses, and served on management groups. I was Coordinator of Mathematics Education from 2002 to 2011.

I am currently working towards my EdD in Mathematics Education with the University of Exeter. I am researching the nature of subject knowledge for teaching in secondary mathematics. I am a member of a research team led by Prof Jill Adler of Kings College, London, investigating the nature of mathematics subject knowledge held by students on Mathematics Enhancement courses.

In my spare time I am involved in the running of a small educational charity, and this work has taken me to various locations in India, offering educational support to schools in disadvantaged communities. I enjoy running, hill-walking and skiing, overseas travel, and the company of good friends!
