Being a student can be very demanding academically, personally and socially and there are times when many of us could benefit from additional support.  During these times, when we are facing problems, or if we are in a period of crisis, counselling may provide the opportunity to talk things over, in confidence, with an understanding and objective outsider.

Not all students who seek counselling have deep-seated problems - it is also a potential resource for those who want to reflect upon, or develop, some aspect of themselves, either personally or academically.

Counselling also endeavours to enable people to come to terms with the ambiguities and problems of everyday living, and may provide an opportunity for clients to increase their skills in interpersonal relationships and to further their own development and self esteem.

Find out More

You can find out more about counselling through our Questions & Answer page .  Here we answer the sort of questions students ask about counselling, confidentiality, the counsellors at Hope and any worries & concerns you may have.

Our Self Help page has an extensive list of web sites and contacts for both local and national sources of help, these are categorised by the various issues or concerns people have.

In addition, for staff we have our Referral Information for Staff page.  Here we have more information for staff on how to help and refer students, they are concerned about, for counselling.

Students' Views

"I want to thank you so much for all your help and support during the time I spent at Hope.  Without you I really don't think that I would have got through half of it, or done as well.  I really do appreciate it and the counselling service that the University offered."

"The fact that they understood and listened without feeling patronized and feeling that they after each session would conclude showing their understanding of the situation."

"It was very relaxed and I was shocked at how much I actually had to say - I thought I would not want to say anything when I turned up."

"It made me realise I'm doing a lot better than I thought I was, and that even though I have got issues, I'm hacking it okay.' 'I was able to develop a better understanding of myself, the way I was feeling, and possible reasons why I could be feeling that way. This helped me to control my inner emotions better, and express them more freely."

"I found it helpful to be able to talk to a complete stranger about my problems. I felt as though I wouldn't be judged. I was given some methods to help relax which was helpful. I felt comfortable with the counsellor."

"The fact that it puts everything into perspective. I came to my own conclusions with help and was able to look forward and not back."

"Having a safe and non-judgemental environment in which to explore feelings. Knowing that there was no arbitrary limit placed on the number of sessions that were offered. Feeling that I was in partnership with the counsellor and that decisions, e.g. to suspend counselling were jointly taken."
