Award

The type of certification you will receive on completion of your course.  For example you might be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Master of Science degree.

BA (Hons)

Bachelor of Arts - an undergraduate academic degree awarded for a course in the liberal arts, or in a combination of arts and sciences. 

 

BA QTS (Hons)

Bachelor of Arts with Qualified Teacher Status - an undergraduate academic degree and teaching qualification.   

 

BDes (Hons)

Bachelor of Design - an undergraduate academic degree awarded specifically for visual design disciplines.   

 

BSc (Hons)

Bachelor of Science - an undergraduate academic degree for a course specialising in the sciences.  

 

Bursary

  • University bursary - a non-repayable award based on gross residual household income made to students who are paying variable tuition fees.
  •  Social Work bursary - a non-repayable, non-means tested award made to social work students.
  •  PGCE bursary - a non-repayable, non-means tested award made to full-time and part-time PGCE students.

Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

There are 74 centres for excellence in the country. Each centre has a particular expertise. Liverpool Hope hosts two centres LearnHigher and Write Now.

Chaplaincy

A team of people representing different Christian traditions that coordinate religious events in the University as well as providing pastoral support to students of all faiths and none.  The chaplaincy base is located in the Warrington Building.

 

Class

Your undergraduate degree is ranked according to its ‘class'.  This is divided into four tiers - first class, upper second class ["2i"], lower second class ["2ii"], and third class.

 

Your class is based on your work at Intermediate and Honours levels.

Combined Honours

An undergraduate degree which includes significant components of two subjects but leads to a single award.  This gives you the opportunity to combine different interests e.g. Business and Computing. 

 

If you divide your time roughly equally between your two subjects, you are following a "Dual" or "Joint" route, and your degree title will take the form "Business AND Computing". 

 

If you spend most of your time on one of the subjects, you are following a "Major-Minor" route, and your degree title will take the form "Business WITH Computing". 

 

It is possible to apply to change from a Dual to a Major-Minor Route at the end of Certificate Level or Intermediate Level.  

 

Credits

Each module you study has a credit value. You must pass enough credits to progress through to the next level of study or to complete your course.

The senior academic responsible for each of our four faculties - Business & Computer Science, Arts & Humanities, Education and Science & Social Sciences.    

 

Disabled Students Allowance

This is an allowance that is available to pay for any support you may need with your studies related to a disability, medical condition or specific learning difficulty.  Contact the Support Service for Students with Disabilities and they will assist you with your claim.

 

Dissertation

A long, written essay or report presenting the author's research and findings and is submitted as a requirement for an academic degree.  You may be required to complete a dissertation during your final year of study.  

 

Distance learning

Study that doesn't involve physically attending the university.  Alternative methods of communication are used including video conferencing, and Virtual Learning Environments through the internet.  

 

Distinction

Postgraduate awards may be made "with Distinction" to students whose work reaches the appropriate level.  Click here to see details of How Distinctions Are Calculated.

 

Dual

A type of Combined Honours course.  See "Combined Honours".

Some of our students visit the Educational Psychologist to see if they have a specific Learning Difficulty such as Dyslexia. (Arranged through the Support Service for Students with Disabilities)

A work related course which is designed and run in partnership with employers, to develop knowledge and skills that are directly relevant to employment.  They include a significant amount of learning in the workplace, are available to study either on a full time or part time basis and cover two levels: Certificate and Intermediate.

If medical or personal problems are affecting your attendance or assignment submissions the GSAA can advise you how to manage your situation.  She can explain the regulations on interrupting study or deferring assessments.  She can also advise about resits, retakes, academic appeals or changing course.

Higher Education (HE)

Education for people aged 18 and over, who have the relevant qualifications and experience to study for a degree, diploma or other qualification.  

 

Honours Degree

Awarded to a student registered for a bachelor's degree [eg BA or BSc] who passes all modules at Honours level.  Students who fail an Honours level module may be eligible for a bachelor's degree without honours.

Independent students

Students who are:

  •   Aged 25 or over before the first day of their course or
  •   Are married before the first day of their course or
  •   Are able to show that they have supported themselves for the three years prior to the start of their course

 

Information Portal

The Information Portal is accessed through the Hope web pages and ALL students must look in the portal, it contains any tasks you need to do, module choices, exam timetables, your results etc.  You can access the Information Portal via Current Students web pages.

LearnHigher

Lecture

This is a formal instructive talk given by a subject specialist to a group of students.   

 

Level

  • The 1st academic year of full-time undergraduate study is normally at Certificate Level [Level C].
 
  • The 2nd academic year of full-time undergraduate study is normally at Intermediate Level [Level I].
 
  • The 3rd academic year of full-time undergraduate study is normally at Honours Level [Level H].
 
  • Taught postgraduate courses [eg MA / MSc / PG Diploma] are normally at Masters Level [Level M].
 
  • Research degrees leading to a Masters award [eg MPhil] are at Masters Level [Level M].

LSP - Learning Support Plan

This is a Plan that outlines support that the University has agreed you are able to receive and information that your tutors will have about your disability, medical condition or Specific Learning Difficulty.  It is approved by students before it is viewed by any member of staff and a student can always access it through the Information Portal.

MA

Major- Minor

Merit

Module

A topic studied within a subject.  Degrees are usually made up of a set number of modules. 

 

Moodle

MPhil

Master of Philosophy - a higher level degree awarded to students who have completed a research-based course at Masters level.

   

MSc

Master of Science - a higher level degree awarded to students who have completed a taught Masters level science-based course.  MSc courses are normally aimed at students who have completed a bachelors degree in a related subject.

PGCE

Postgraduate Certificate of Education - a course which focuses on developing your teaching skills in the subject you intend to teach. You are expected to have a good understanding of your chosen subject(s) - usually to degree level - before you start training .  Differs from an ordinary PG Cert course due to the time spent in schools and in training for teaching in addition to academic studies at Masters level.  If you pass a PGCE you will be eligible for Qualified Teacher Status [QTS].  If you pass the QTS elements but reach only Honours level in your academic work you may be eligible for a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, which would also enable you to teach. 

 

Placement year

A year where a student gains experience in the workplace.  

 

Plagiarism

The false presentation of someone else's writing as one's own.  The University treats plagiarism very seriously.  Click here to view the University's policy.

 

PG Certificate Course

Post Graduate course that involves study at Masters Level to the equivalent of 60 credits, e.g. PG Cert in Mentoring in Education.  A PG Certificate may be awarded to students who do not complete a PG Diploma or taught Masters Course.  

 

PG Diploma Course

Post Graduate course that involves study at Masters Level, to the equivalent of 120 credits e.g. PG Diploma in play Therapy.  A PG Diploma may be awarded to students who do not complete a taught Masters course 

 

PhD

Doctor of Philosophy - a higher level degree awarded to students who have completed a research-based course at Doctoral level.  

 

PVC

Semester

Some modules are available for only part of the University's full academic year.  The teaching periods for such modules are called "semesters", and usually comprise either the Advent Term or the Lent and Trinity terms.  Semester-based courses are typically available for postgraduates and for students taking part of the year abroad on an international exchange programme. 

 

Seminar

A small group of students, led by a member of academic staff, gathering for recurring meetings. Focus is on a particular subject each time, in which everyone present is requested to actively participate.  

 

Service & Leadership Award (SALA)

The Service and Leadership Award provides students with the opportunity to graduate with recognition of service work that they have undertaken. The award is structured into four components: preparation and training; leadership; reflective practise and service to others.  Click here for further details.

Term

The University's academic year is divided into three terms: Advent Term [September to Christmas], Lent Term [January to Easter] and Trinity Term [Easter onwards].  Click here to view Detailed Term Dates for each course.

Most students follow year-long courses that are taught throughout the three terms.  However, some postgraduate courses offer modules that cover a shorter period [called a "semester"], and it is also possible to apply to study overseas for a single "semester".

 

Tutorial

A small class of one, or only a few, students, in which a member of academic staff gives individual attention.

Universities and Colleges Admissions Service - the organisation responsible for managing applications to higher education courses in the UK.  

UCAS Tariff

The new points system developed by UCAS allowing equal comparison between academic and vocationally based awards. The Tariff unifies qualifications from various awarding bodies, including those in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

A student studying either a bachelors degree [eg BA or BSc] or a Foundation Degree.
