Research

Hope Business School has a thriving research-informed teaching culture with two international research centres, namely CREST (Centre for Research in Emergency Services) and SEED (Social and Ethical Enterprise Development). We are also editors of two internationally acclaimed journals including both the Social Enterprise Journal and International Journal of Emergency Services.

The Centre for Research in Emergency Services and Training (CREST) is a unique network in England’s North West, which will host and endorse research projects, events, networks and affiliations across emergency services management both nationally and abroad. CREST’s mission is to provide a multi-disciplinary perspective in emergency services research and bridge the theoretical and practical aspects of the profession.  Key objectives of CREST include providing a credible source of knowledge and applied research in the emergency services; developing and deliver training programmes for government agencies, host organisations, academics and wider community; to develop professional development courses relevant to the sector with a progression route to a master’s qualification and develop a professional doctoral programme in emergency services management.

The SEED Centre (Social and Ethical Enterprise Development) is the UK’s first university research, teaching and enterprise centre that formally bridges the worlds of both social enterprise and ethical business. Established through funding from the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF), the SEED Centre provides international academic leadership in the area of Social and Ethical Enterprise (SEE) scholarship, together with offering research-informed teaching on the principles, practice and formation of SEEs.  In addition, it is actively engaged in developing a range of sustainable and highly entrepreneurial revenue-generating project, including new applications for 3G mobile platforms, to assist ethical consumers; and creating 'safari-opportunities' for enterprise leaders from different national and regional territories to visit alternative SEE models in distant places.

The centre is directed by Dr Bob Doherty, Head of Hope Business School, a pre-eminent international expert in Fair Trade, formerly marketing Director of Divine Chocolate and, currently Editor-in-Chief of the Social Enterprise Journal (Emerald Publishing). SEED’s Deputy Director is Revd Tony Bradley, with twenty-five years of experience in managing SEEs and teaching, writing and consulting on organisational leadership and change.
