Overview

Health Sciences is a friendly and dynamic department that offers a variety of science based undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. These include Health, Sport & Exercise Science, Biology, Human Biology, Nutrition, Sports Studies, and Health, Nutrition & Fitness.

All staff in Health Sciences are experts in the areas in which they teach, as evidenced by their research profiles, which you can find in the staff index. Staff in the Department publish at international level, and bring their research findings into the curriculum.

The multidisciplinary team also pride themselves on providing a supportive environment for student success across the whole of its provision. We help students develop their academic, practical and personal skills to their full potential. Tutors know their students by name, and offer regular opportunities for individual support giving published 'office hours'.

An overarching aim is to enable Health Sciences student to develop into confident, independent learners. All our single honours students undertake an individual supervised research project towards demonstrating this, which is generally of much interest to employers, as well as being the highlight of their studies for most students.

Health Sciences students also benefit from undertaking the laboratory and field work we offer, which again add value to their studies, and increase employability.

We have well developed links with higher educational establishments in India through the Institute of Applied Social Science in the Faculty of Sciences and Social Sciences at Hope. This includes close academic and working relationships with Bishop Heber, Tamil Nadu, Stella Maris College and Madras Christian College in South East India. This also includes a visiting Professor in Biology, Professor Alex Jesudasan from Madras Christian College for teaching and research collaborations.

The department has NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) accreditation and offers the professional qualification: NEBOSH Certificate in the Management of Health and Wellbeing at Work.
