We offer the opportunity for students to study for a research degree in an academic environment which values excellence in research and scholarship. Increasing numbers of students are choosing to come to Hope to undertake research degrees in wide variety of subject areas, and also become part of a stimulating, supportive academic community.

Our research students come from around the world and contribute to both the research environment and broader aspects of student life at Hope. Students choose to study for MPhil and PhD degrees on a full-time or part-time basis. 

Research students at Liverpool Hope work within a university which supports and is expanding research opportunities for students and staff. Liverpool Hope works closely with external research partners who include other universities, businesses and communities.

What opportunities are there for postgraduate research?

Postgraduate research opportunities are available across a range of disciplines in arts and humanities, business and computing, education, humanities and sciences and social sciences. If you have research interests which are not listed but you would like to study at Hope, please contact us to discuss the possibilities which might be open to you.

Prospective Students from the US/Canada:

Liverpool Hope Department of Theology, Philosophy and Religious Studies welcomes interest from overseas candidates (e.g., the United States, Canada, Korea, Singapore, Nigeria, and other countries) in the possibility of researching for a PhD in various subject areas within theology, philosophy, and religious studies. You may contact either Prof. Ron Geaves (geavesr@hope.ac.uk) or Rev Dr Peter McGrail (mcgraip@hope.ac.uk) for further information. Our Department can offer supervision in biblical studies, practical theology, systematic theology, history of Christianity, Christian mission in Africa and Asia, World Religions (particularly Buddhism and Islam), Jewish Studies, modern philosophy, and other aspects of Religion and Society. 

Who awards the degrees?

Research degrees are awarded by Liverpool Hope University. All procedures for admissions, annual monitoring, progression and graduation for Hope research students are carried out by the Postgraduate Research Office at Liverpool Hope.
