The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) is the UK's national advisory body serving the interests of International Students and those who work with them. The British Council have also published a booklet called Creating Confidence that contains lots of important information for students planning on studying in the UK. Students are advised to print off a copy and read the information prior to leaving their home country.
 

Health and Insurance Advice

The UKCISA document 'Keeping Healthy' contains lots of advice on looking after yourself, as well as practical information on how to obtain medical treatment.

Endsleigh, in association with UKCISA, has produced an insurance policy specifically designed for International Students. You should consider purchasing both Possessions Insurance, to protect belongings, and medical insurance to protect yourself. Both can be provided by Endsleigh.

If you are not entitled to treatment under the National Health Service, you should make sure you have adequate medical insurance to cover medical costs, if you fall ill, and also to cover the additional possible costs resulting from illness. These can be substantial, and include:

• Loss of fees if you are unable to complete your course
• Additional treatment and medical expenses not covered by the National Health Service
• Costs of returning home if a relative is taken ill
• Costs of a relative visiting you in the UK if you fall ill
• Returning to your home country for treatment

Even if you are entitled to free National Health Service treatment whilst in the UK, you should consider taking out insurance which covers the above additional costs.

European Economic Area (EEA) nationals can receive National Health Service care while in the UK and should obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before coming to the UK.

The UK also has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements for:

• EEA nationals;
• Students who are nationals of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldovia, New Zealand, Russia, Tajikistan, Yurkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan;
• Students who are residents of Anguilla, Australia, Barbados, Bosnia & Herzegovina, British Virgin Islands, Channel Islands, Croatia, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Macedonia, Montenegro, Montserrat, Serbia, St. Helena, and Turks and Caicos Islands.
