Tourism is taught by a small and friendly team of tutors with a wide range of knowledge and expertise in tourism issues. Students develop their understanding of tourism in the context of topics such as tourism destinations, contemporary tourism operational issues, the ‘new' forms of tourism, international tourism management, research skills, urban regeneration and events management. The course features a number of visits and residential trips including destinations such as Malta, Barcelona and North Wales. The study of tourism is fascinating in its own right but it also opens up opportunities for all sorts of careers. These include attractions management, public sector tourism planning, marketing and promotion, events management, outdoor recreation management, hotel and hospitality management, airline executive and urban regeneration. As the tourism industry continues to expand there will be a continuing need for trained graduates in this area. However, a degree in tourism can also open the door to all sorts of other graduate-level jobs in a variety of sectors. Anya Chapman is responsible for the delivery of this course. Why do we feel the need to travel? Why are travel and holidays now so important in our lives? What are the impacts of tourism on societies, economies and environments? How can we better understand the workings of the tourism industry? Why is the package holiday now declining in popularity and what are all the forms of ‘new' tourism that are taking its place?
