Modern Foreign Languages

UCAS Code: X1R9 Duration: 4 years

Overview

The specialist subject of Modern Foreign Languages for students studying Primary Teaching with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)  is unique in offering the only undergraduate languages provision at Hope.

In the specialist subject you will look at:

  • How languages are learned and how they can be taught to primary pupils, including how the many theories of language learning relate to practice.
  • Improving your own foreign language skills. The principal opportunity will be to update or acquire skills in French and Spanish during the first 2 years of study, with a focus throughout on developing language skills for the primary setting.
  • The role of language in society, taking an applied linguistic approach to look at current themes relating to the importance and relevance of language to everyday life.

A key feature of this specialist subject  is the opportunity for a short stay abroad with classroom experience. There is also an opportunity towards the end of your course, to research primary languages provision in your placement school.
