A Tradition of Hope
Liverpool Hope is a liberal arts university with a proud tradition of 165 years in higher education- two of its’
founding colleges were established in 1844 and 1865- and traditional educational values are at the core of our
community. With over 7,500 students, it’s a place where professors know students by name- the average class
size here is 20.
Liverpool Hope has two campuses in Liverpool. The main campus is at Hope Park, set in 45 leafy acres in south
Liverpool, while Cornerstone is the performing arts campus situated in vibrant downtown Liverpool. There are
free busses running between the two campuses, so there’s never a problem getting to classes!
A Student City
Liverpool, birthplace of the Beatles, has just celebrated its’ 800th birthday. It’s one of the UK’s most popular
student cities with some 60,000 students at the last count. Students find the city welcoming; it’s an exciting and
safe environment to live, study and enjoy. Liverpool has a wealth of cultural offerings with more museums and
art galleries than any other city in the U.K outside London, as well as world-class concert halls and theatres.
For those looking for something different, Liverpool is also home to two of the most successful football (soccer)
teams in Europe: Liverpool and Everton, and a wealth of nightlife and shopping!
Supportive Hope
Liverpool Hope has an active Student Support and Well Being team, offering help with all aspects of student
life, from housing to health. As well as this Liverpool Hope’s Chaplaincy plays an important role in the life of
the University, providing pastoral and religious support to all students. The library has extended opening hours
designed to fit around your needs - one of the most flexible in the UK. Services like the Writing Centre give
students the academic support to succeed in their classes, while professors are approachable and welcome the
opportunity to discuss and give feedback.
Living at Hope
All Study Abroad students have guaranteed housing at one of Liverpool Hope’s campuses. Campus housing
has 24 hour security and offers a choice of both modern and traditional dorms, with extra options such as
private bathrooms. Each dorm has a Resident Tutor who lives in and provides support to students. The
Resident Tutor team is available around the clock, so there is always somebody available to answer questions.
There is a great sense of community in the dorms with a variety of events organized such as intermural sports
teams, movie nights and trips to local sports events, museums and art galleries. There are also opportunities to
get away from the city and into the country with excursions to the Lake District and surrounding areas.
A real bonus of living on campus is that you can attend the regular Dining in Nights which bring students
together to enjoy a formal three course meal. These meals take place every 2-3 weeks and allow students to relax
and listen to guest speakers such as visiting professors.
Green Hope
Liverpool Hope is green and getting greener! The university is proud of its’ attractive ‘garden’ environment
and the Hope Park campus is a significant green space in south Liverpool. The campus supports a wide range
of native plant species including the spectacular rare bee orchids. Liverpool Hope is also working hard to be
greener with an environmental policy at the heart of its’ operations. It is the first university in the UK to gain
Fairtrade status.
Having Fun at Hope
Liverpool Hope’s Student Union helps create the total student experience by supporting events, clubs and
societies. The Fresher’s Fair welcomes new students in September with a week of events and activities including
an Irish party night with live traditional music, tours of the city, an activities fair, an outdoor carnival with
a dj, plus lots of ‘welcome’ parties! The Student Union also organizes
dances, discos and balls each semester, including the popular Christmas
Ball.
Some of the more popular clubs and societies include:
• The RAG (Raising and Giving) Society, which organizes fun events such as drama performances and trips
to Europe (in Halloween costumes!) to raise money for charity.
• The Irish Society- Liverpool Hope’s large Irish community holds lots of events throughout the year,
promoting Irish culture and sports. The Society puts on a huge St Patrick’s Day party, complete with live
traditional music.
• The Drama Society performs regularly at the Cornerstone campus, so whether you are a seasoned performer
or a raw beginner, you’ll be able to take to the stage!
• The Bio Diversity group monitors and maintains the wildlife and flora at Liverpool Hope’s campuses.
Regular surveys and walks take place throughout the year.
• The Political Debating Society- This group meets regularly to debate the political issues of the day, as well
as host prominent guests such as representatives of the three major British political parties. Recently they
welcomed a Member of European Parliament to speak to the group.
Exploring the North West and Beyond
Liverpool is a city with a beautiful coastline, with miles of beaches and great countryside nearby. Historic,
picturesque Chester, vibrant Manchester and the Lake District are right next door. London is just over a two
hour train ride away, and Liverpool John Lennon Airport offers low cost flights to destinations throughout
Europe and beyond.
Sports at Liverpool Hope
The Athletic Union at Liverpool Hope has over 24 teams currently- from rugby to football (that’s soccer to
you!) to Gaelic (Irish) football, and everything in between. The Liverpool Hope teams play in the British
Universities Sports Association Leagues and take participants of all abilities. Every Wednesday, all of the teams
assemble at the Student Union to socialize and have fun off the field. Joining a team is a great way to meet
people and find out what being a student in England is all about!
Cultural Hope
Liverpool Hope’s creative and performing arts campus at the Cornerstone provides state of the art facilities
for all students, as well as hosting the annual Cornerstone Festival, which has something for everyone: music,
comedy, dance, theatre, and many other events to enjoy. Then there’s Radio Hope- run by students for
students. The University also has a unique partnership with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, one
of the world’s oldest established orchestras. All Liverpool Hope students can also get substantial discounts on
the many cultural activities across Liverpool through the student Arts Card.
Outdoor Hope
The University has an outdoor education centre, Plas Caerdeon, in mid-Wales. The Victorian mansion, where
Charles Darwin stayed, forms the centerpiece of the 20 acre woodland estate, which is designated a Site of
Special Scientific Interest by Natural England. There are organized student trips to Plas Caerdeon throughout
the year. Faculty often take class groups away for two to three days to learn in a different environment and
enjoy the breath taking scenery.
