INVITATION TO APPLY FOR PROMOTION TO PROFESSOR 2017
Colleagues are invited to submit applications for the post of Professor. Applicants will be required to complete an application form which covers the following three sections:-
i. Learning and Teaching
ii. Scholarship and Research
iii. Wider contribution to the mission of the University, Faculty and subject team
The application form may be no longer than ten pages and the font may be no smaller than point 12. Applications submitted in any other format than the application form will not be considered. Please note that no appendices will be required from applicants nor considered by the panel. More information can be found in the guidance notes document under the section ‘Application Process’.
In addition to the application you are also asked to provide an academic CV. This document captures only relatively recent information relating to research activity (including research supervision). It will act as a guide to the panel in coming to a view on ‘currency, duration and frequency’ of research.
Please note that candidates are not required to provide details of referees. Where the Panel is unable to come to a common mind on the quality of a research output, it may seek additional reports from one or more additional external experts. Through the submission of the application candidates are agreeing to this. The Panel will consider the advice of the external advice but will ultimately exercise its own judgement in determining the outcome of promotion cases. Where externals are to be approached, the Panel will ensure independence. This does not preclude the use of existing external advisors such as the University’s REF advisor for the relevant Unit of Assessment where such information already exists.
No less than two examples of REF-level research work will be considered by the panel and the candidate may submit up to four. These must have been published after the 1st January 2014. These publications should be those that the candidate considers to be representative of his or her best work. Please note that research outputs other than monographs and articles in peer review journals etc. will be considered, for example, performances, electronic media, and exhibitions. The candidate should in addition submit a one-page summary of future research plans being careful to provide clear, solid evidence of progress and likely place and date of publication. The closing date for applications will be Wednesday 27th September 2017 by 5.00 p.m. and late applications will not be accepted.
The effective date of appointments will be backdated to 1st September 2017 but there may be occasions where it is appropriate for an appointment to take effect from an earlier date.
Colleagues who are considering submitting an application are advised to consult your Dean and Head of Department in advance. This partly as a courtesy but also because they will be able to offer general guidance about the application, especially about the category ‘wider contribution to the mission of the University, Faculty and subject team’. They will also confirm who the appropriate person is within the Faculty who can provide more detailed advice about how to address (a) learning and teaching, and (b) scholarship and research categories in the application process. Such prior notice and consultation will also make it easier for them to support applicants with a reference.
