Associate Professor Laura Hamer
HONORARY SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW
0151 291 3620
I joined Liverpool Hope University as a Lecturer in January 2012, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014. I served as Head of Music from 2014 to 2017. I am currently a Senior Research Fellow in Music. Prior to coming to Hope, I worked at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire of Music and the Open University. I hold a BA in Music from Oxford University and an MA and PhD in Musicology from Cardiff University. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and hold an LRSM in Advanced Piano Performance.
My main areas of research interest lie in women in music, nineteenth- and twentieth-century French and Austro-German music, reception and criticism studies, and popular music. In September 2013 I organised the Eighth Biennial International Conference on Music since 1900, and in March 2015 I organised the Women in Music since 1913 Symposium. I served as a Committee Member of the National Association for Music in Higher Education from 2014 to 2016. I established the Women in Music Research Group at Liverpool Hope University in 2014. My monograph, Female Composers, Conductors, Performers: Musiciennes of Interwar France, 1919-1939, is due to be published by Routledge in 2018. I am the editor of The Cambridge Companion to Women in Music since 1900 (forthcoming, Cambridge University Press). I have published articles and book chapters on various aspects of women in music and nineteenth- and twentieth-century music, including Jane Evrard and the Orchestre féminin de Paris, Germaine Tailleferre, women and the interwar Prix de Rome competition, Olivier Messiaen, Armande de Polignac, Elsa Barraine, Gerard Manley Hopkins as composer, and music criticism. For my current Senior Research Fellowship, I am co-investigating the Liverpool dance band leader Mary Daly Hamer (no relation!) with my Liverpool Hope colleague, Dr Mike Brocken.
At Liverpool Hope, I teach on a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses, including Introduction to Classical Music Studies (Romanticism), Issues and Ideas in Music, Music in Context, Topics in Musicology (Women in Music), Advanced Classical Music Studies, Dissertation/Research Project, Cultural Musicology (MA), and Historical Musicology (MA). I served as BA Music Course Leader from 2014 to 2017 and MA Music Course Leader from 2015 to 2016. I supervise a number of PGR students.
