I am Senior lecturer in International Relations, director of the MA in International Relations and Director of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Centre for War and Peace Studies at Liverpool Hope University. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Recognition Reference PR095974). I hold a PhD in Politics from the University of Manchester (Manchester, UK), an MA in Politics from Universidad de los Andes (Bogota, Colombia) a PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from Liverpool Hope University and a BA in Communication Studies from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogota, Colombia). 

My broad academic experience in Spanish and English-speaking environments dates back to 1997 as a research assistant during my undergraduate studies and then as a full-time lecturer since 2001, first in Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Bogota (Colombia) in the School of Communication and Languages and the PhD Programme in Humanities (2001-2013). During those years, I was also an assistant lecturer in Los Andes University and a guest lecturer in EAFIT University in Colombia PG Dip in Political Communication. I also served in key leadership roles in Colombia as Editorial Coordinator and then Editor/Director of the Journal of Communication and Languages at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana 'Signo y Pensamiento' (peer reviewed), and Curriculum Coordinator in the area of International Relations, Processes and Socio-Political Conflicts in the PhD in Social Sciences and Humanities at Javeriana.

Since 2013, I have been a full-time lecturer at Liverpool Hope University, teaching Communication (2013), and Politics and International Relations (2014-present) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as supervising dissertations. During my time at Liverpool Hope University, I have been the director of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Centre for War and Peace Studies, the MA in International Relations, Peace Studies, and the MA in Politics and International Relations. I am currently in the Advisory Board of the Conflict Research Society (University of Kent), external examiner for the University of Leeds ISC, International Year One, member of the Editorial Committee and reviewer for the Colombian Journal 'Estudios Poli­ticos' (Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia) and 'Signo y Pensamiento' (Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia), and I have been reviewer for British and Colombian Journals including Peacebuilding, Media, War and Conflict, Revista Colombiana de Ciencias Sociales, Estudios Politicos, Palabra Clave, Signo y Pensamiento, Papel Politico, and Anagramas.

My research, pursued independently or as part of a team, has focused strongly on socially relevant projects in partnership with the public and the third sector. I worked first as a research assistant in political communication projects sponsored by institutions including Pontificia Universidad, the Ministry of Communications, Fundacion Social and the Instituto Colombiano de Altos Estudios ICAE (1997-1999). Subsequently, I was a researcher for projects sponsored by Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, the Inter-American Dialogue, the Gabo Foundation and the British Embassy, Colfuturo, and Liverpool Hope University. My research interests focus on the area of political communication including relationships between states, civil society and media in the context of conflict and peacebuilding, and communication and international relations with emphasis on Latin American Politics. So far, I have published three books and one forthcoming (2022), as well as book chapters and articles in English and Spanish on on the impact of event driven news in the projection of US foreign policy in Colombia, the use of media by civil society organizations to foster democracy and human rights in Colombia and Latin America, the relationships between political and media systems, political and media debates regarding transitional justice in Colombia, and international cooperation, mediated diplomacy and peacebuilding in Colombia.

My research has translated into public engagement regarding the role of media in conflict, peacebuilding and transitional justice in Colombia with journalists, decision-makers an academic community; the role of civil society organizations and media outlets in the promotion of democracy and human rights in Latin America with civil society organizations and media outlets; and the role of countries and international organizations in peacebuilding in Colombia with decisionmakers and academic community through participation in events organized by Universities, organizations such as PNUD or the Association of Commonwealth Universities Peace and Reconciliation Network, journalistic organizations in Colombia such as CdR, Gabo Foundation and Media for Peace, the public sector in Colombia and the Colombian Embassy in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
