I read music at the University of Surrey, where I focussed on composition, then undertook research at Oxford University (Magdalen College; D.Phil. 1983), specializing in Tudor music with particular emphasis on the works of Thomas Tallis. Between 1984 and 1997 I held lectureships at New College and Christ Church, Oxford, and in 1997 was appointed Christian A. Johnson Professor of the Arts at Middlebury College, Vermont (U.S.A.). In 2000 I returned to Britain as a freelance musicologist, and for three years acted as editor of the journal Early Music (Oxford University Press). Since 2004 I have been researching and developing the online Christ Church Library Music Catalogue, a major project that addresses the contents and provenance history of the eighteenth-century music collections at Christ Church, Oxford; free public access is available at http://library.chch.ox.ac.uk/music/. I joined Liverpool Hope University as an Adjunct Professor of Musicology in 2010. When not in Liverpool, I divide my time between the Oxfordshire Cotswolds and the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. I am an enthusiastic cook, an intrepid walker, and a keen observer of the natural world.
