Research Interests My research into porcelain and Bone China vessels relates to the study of rock formations and tidal changes along the Lancashire coastline. Recently this has included the area of North Devon around the Budleigh Salterton region. My research into geological formations from the areas of the Giant's Causeway Northern Ireland, Grand Canyon Arizona and the Minais Gerais area of Brazil has developed during the past year. The coastline of Australia and particularly Frazer Island has also been particularly influential during the making of these latest pieces. I also research the use of sand-blasting techniques in relation to pierced relief decoration. Technical research into the translucency of Bone China bodies and the optimum firing schedule is ongoing. Light and the interplay of translucency both internally and externally has manifested itself in these recent pieces. I am currently working on a Research Collaboration with Professor Steven Dixon at Manchester Metropolitan University. This project is studying the various degrees that bone ash additions have on the translucency of Bone China- in particular, the use of animal bone ash found in a variety of locations from Kangaroo bones in Australia to sheep skulls in the Shetland Islands. This new form of Bone China will be entitled “ROADKILL BONE CHINA”.
