Caroline (Carly) Bagelman grew up on Coast Salish Territories in the west coast of Canada on Vancouver Island. She completed her BA (Hons) in Political Science and MA in Cultural, Social and Political Thought at the University of Victoria, worked as a curriculum designer for the Critical Thinking Consortium (at the University of British Columbia) and Co-operative Education (at the University of Victoria). She completed a PhD in Education at the University of Glasgow. In her current role of Senior Lecturer, she leads the second year of the Single Honours programme, acts as the Open Days co-ordinator, and chairs the Student Voice Committee. Beginning in autumn 2021, she became Co-Director of the Centre for Education and Policy Analysis (CEPA).
Her current research considers the ways in which UK schools respond to the challenges and possibilities of forced migration. In particular, she looks at how the Schools of Sanctuary movement endeavours to create welcome for newly arrived (refugee/asylum seeker) students through induction and curriculum, and educate all students about the nature of forced migration and welcome. She also looks at informal educational spaces responding to forced migration such as Liverpool's Initial Accommodation Provision for newly arrived asylum seekers living in hostels.
Another key area of Carly's research and teaching is around colonialism and decolonization in education (which a focus on the Canadian context).
