I am a qualified chartered accountant, and became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) in 1983 and a Fellow of the Institute in 1993. Prior to that, I graduated from the University of Liverpool with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1979.I have spent all of my professional life in practice. Having qualified with Thornton Baker (now Grant Thornton) in 1983, I joined PKF in 1984 and became a partner in 1989. PKF merged nationally with BDO in 2013. My client work mainly focused on the SME sector and the not for profit sector, including education and social housing. I was the office lead partner in Liverpool for the Firm, and was on the Firm’s Northern Region Management Board from 2007 to 2011.My professional experience includes auditing and assurance, financial reporting and accounting, risk management, corporate governance and strategic advice. This has encompassed financial performance, change management, quality control, regulatory reviews, client relationship management, people management and performance appraisals, staff recruitment and business development. I have been closely involved in student recruitment, training and staff development, and in particular mentoring trainee accountants through their Institute Training Contracts. My ongoing technical training has been supported by CPD and regulatory updates. Alongside my professional work, I have experience as a school governor within Liverpool Diocese, as a charity trustee and as an audit committee chair. I am also an Independent non-Executive Director of a housing association. In 2006/7, I was elected President of The Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants, and in 1990/1 was President of the Liverpool Chartered Accountants’ Students Association. In March 2017 I was elected a Council member of ICAEW, representing Liverpool.
