Spirit of Merseyside

Speaker: Peter David Martin Woods DL (High Sheriff of Merseyside)

This autobiographical talk with the High Sheriff of Merseyside Peter Woods will explore the Spirit of Merseyside through an exploration of Peter’s own rich and diverse life that holds many connections to the regional space we know as Merseyside. In doing so, Peter explores what it means to represent the spirit of Merseyside through his life, work and role as High Sheriff in Merseyside and the City of Liverpool.

About

In 2010  Peter was installed as a Deputy Lieutenant for Merseyside and is proud to have undertaken many roles for the Lieutenancy in that time. He was born in Carlingford, County Louth, Ireland in 1950. He was educated to second level education in Ireland and subsequently moved to Liverpool, where both his parents were born and where his family had maintained family and business connections. After a year’s student teaching in Kirkby, near Liverpool, several years as an articled clerk with a firm of accountants and working in the trustee department of a bank, Peter established Ryan Wood Antiques, in 1972, with his partner Francis Ryan. They ran this successful city centre business for 33 years and still continue some aspects of their business from home. During that time they were well positioned to become very familiar with the city, its culture, business and academic worlds; creating many lasting links. This made them very aware of the great qualities of the citizens and the deprivation suffered my many. Peter is a collector of contemporary art and became involved with many of the cities galleries and museums serving and Chairing on committees.
