The Search for Truth in the Beauty of Nature
Wednesday, 13 February 2019
, 1pm
EDEN 130 Lecture Theatre
Speaker: Dr Kevin Crawford, Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography, Department of Geography and Environmental Science
Linus Carl Pauling stated in 1967 that “Science is the search for truth, the effort to understand the world; it involves the rejection of bias, of dogma, of revelation, but not the rejection of morality.” 2019 marks the 160th anniversary since the publication of one of the most significant scientific publications and one of the most pivotal works in evolutionary biology ‘On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection’ and the 210th anniversary of the birth of its author Charles Darwin.
The subject of this foundation hour is not mainly focused on Darwin or Origin but an exploration of the key scientific events that influenced or galvanised Darwin’s’ thinking. In particular, it will consider the debate over the formation, and age, of the Earth and indeed the development of the key principles of geology that are still used today to understand the Earth.
