Dr James Burke OBE, Rector of Liverpool Institute of Higher Education (LIHE) from 1980 to 1995, after which LIHE became Liverpool Hope, died on Saturday 2nd September 2017.

During his fifteen year tenure, Dr Burke was instrumental in bringing together the three constituent colleges of what became LIHE and then Liverpool Hope. On his retirement in 1995, the institution was already fully integrated.

Dr Burke's major contribution to the University's history was formally recognised when the University conferred on him the Doctorate of Letters (honoris causa) in 2012. He will be missed by the Hope community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr Burke's children, grandchildren, and wider family and friends.

The funeral will take place at noon on Tuesday 12th September 2017 at St Mary's Church, Woolton.
