A Liverpool Hope University academic has published a new book that aims to help students perfect the art of writing a dissertation.

Dr Cathal O'Siochru, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, recently released A Student Guide to Writing Research Reports, Papers, Theses and Dissertations, which provides detailed guidance on the key elements of academic writing.

Described as an essential resource for students, Dr O'Siochru was motivated to write the book after being unable to find one he felt his students could use to help them write their dissertations.

“I wanted to recommend a book that helped them write their dissertations and other research reports, but couldn't find one that was a good fit,” he explained.

“There were entire books devoted to essay writing, but I couldn't find a corresponding book entirely devoted to writing research reports.

“There were plenty of books explaining how to design and carry out research, but in those books the guidance on the writing of the report was delegated to a single chapter at most, so I decided to write one myself.”

A Student Guide to Writing Research Reports, Papers, Theses and Dissertations includes nine chapters which contain instructions and advice from the basics of report writing through to the most complex issues a student may encounter.

Alongside this guidance there are examples which show the principles of report writing in action and exercises which allow you to test your understanding as you learn.

Reflecting on the book, Dr O’Siochru added: “I'm very excited to have completed this book.

“It sums up years of experience working with students and helping them with their reports and dissertations and I'm hoping this book will help the next generations of students, too.”

A Student Guide to Writing Research Reports, Papers, Theses and Dissertations is published by Routledge and available to buy now.
