A British Academy and Jisc research grant has been awarded to Senior Lecturer in Disability and Education Dr Owen Barden.
The grant will help to fund Dr Barden’s project Inside the History of Learning Difficulties, which will use the UK Medical Heritage Library Corpus to generate new knowledge about the history of learning disability in the UK.
Dr Barden aims to show how the accessing of archive material and the research process itself can be enhanced for marginalised groups. In particular, how bringing a variety of perspectives to the archive material can enrich our interpretation and understanding not only of that material, but also of the lived experience of learning disability today.
The project will use bespoke methodology to combine archival research with workshops that are designed to enable learning-disabled participants to access, interpret and creatively respond to archived material.
