Associate Professor Sonja Tiernan, Head of History and Politics at Liverpool Hope, will speak at Merseyside Maritime Museum as part of the its Votes 100: remarkable women series.

Tracing the story of the Countess Markievicz, Associate Professor Tiernan will explore the history of the votes for women campaign in Britain and Ireland.

Countess Markievicz was the first woman elected to both the House of Commons and Dail Eireann (government of Ireland), and her story touches on the complex connections between the suffrage movements in Ireland and England.

The free event will be held at Merseyside Maritime Museum on Friday 26th October at 2.30pm.

Securing votes for women was one of the initial stages of the feminist movement and in this talk, Associate Professor Tiernan will discuss how in Ireland it was a complex political issue with ideologies of nationalism and unionism.
