Acting Head of the Department of History and Politics Dr Sonja Tiernan was recently invited to address a special audience at the Irish Ambassador’s residence in Ottawa, Canada, to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland.
She later travelled to Toronto when she was invited to lead an MA seminar on Irish women and the republican movement that helped establish the Irish Free State, and subsequent Republic of Ireland at the University of York, Toronto.
The trip was fully funded jointly by the Irish Embassy in Canada, the Canadian Association of Irish Studies and York University, Toronto, and will lead to a publication in Canada. Dr Tiernan's talk at the Ambassador's residence was recorded by Irish Radio Canada and featured on its Gaelic hour.
