A new article by Lecturer in Politics Dr Danny Rye and Dr Katharine Dommett of the University of Sheffield has been published in the journal Politics.

The article - Taking up the baton? New campaigning organisations and the enactment of representative functions - explores the extent to which campaigning organisations like Citizens UK and 38 Degrees have taken on the civil society roles traditionally attributed to political parties.

It looks at participation, conflict management and providing ‘linkage’ between citizens and the state, and explores the consequences for how citizens relate to and engage with contemporary politics.

The article is available here.

Elsewhere, Senior Lecturer in Public Law Dr Carlo Pedrioli has had a recent article published in Comparative Perspectives on Freedom of Expression 197.

Entitled Pope Francis and the Limits of Freedom of Expression, the article provides a perspective on how far freedom of expression in an open society should go.

Dr Pedrioli looks at the papal remarks following the 2015 terrorist attack on the French publication Charlie Hebdo. He explores the comments in relation to US free speech law and the principles of Catholic theology, within the context of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons.
