The Department of Disability Studies in Education is set to welcome renowned scholar Professor Lennard J Davis, whose past students include Barack Obama.

Professor Davis, from the University of Illinois in Chicago, will discuss Sorrowless Lamentation: Viewers’ Emotional Response to the Disabled Poor in Art in a special seminar.

In the seminar, he will review the history of the disabled poor in Western Art and the emotional response of viewers.

Professor Davis is the Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the Department of Disability and Human Development, English, and Medical Education. He is particularly interested in the repeated tropes of disability and poverty over time, and how the viewers’ response might have changed.

The author/editor of more than 20 books, Professor Davis is considered influential in the field and has been an active member of the Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies since its inauguration in 2006.

All are welcome to attend the seminar on Wednesday 15th November at 2pm in EDEN 109.
