Associate Professor Amelia Yeates

I am Associate Professor in Art History and have overall responsibility for the delivery of Art & Design History at Liverpool Hope Previously, I ran the MA Art History & Curating. I specialise in nineteenth-century British art and contemporary visual culture. My research focuses on nineteenth-century representations of reading practices (especially women's), Pre-Raphaelitism, representations of Pygmalion in the nineteenth century and feminist theory in relation to contemporary visual culture.

Prior to taking up post at Liverpool Hope University, I worked at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery as a researcher on their major award-winning online resource for Pre-Raphaelite studies - - and have taught at the University of Birmingham, Coventry University, Birmingham City University and the Open University.

I have edited two important essay collections: firstly Pre-Raphaelite Masculinities: Constructions of Masculinity in Art and Literature (with Serena Trowbridge, 2014) and secondly Picturing the Reader: Reading and Representation in the Long Nineteenth Century (with Beth Palmer, 2022).

I have reviewed articles for journals such as Nineteenth Century Studies, 19 and Journal of Victorian Culture, and book manuscripts for publishers such as Routledge and Palgrave Macmillan, as well as applications to research funding councils. 

Teaching Specialisms:

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and my teaching specialisms include: nineteenth-century art; early twenty-century European art; American and European act c. 1945-1975; contemporary British art; critical theory; and gender theory. At Liverpool Hope I teach across all three levels of the undergraduate Art & Design History curriculum and am responsible for co-ordinating Level 3 research project supervision. Previously, I ran the MA Art History and Curating for ten years.

Externally, I have acted as External Examiner for the BA and MA Art History/Museum and Gallery Studies programmes at Aberystwyth University, as an external panel member for programme revalidations (at Arts University Bournemouth) and am an Executive Committee member of BAVS (British Association of Victorian Studies). I have extensive experience of curriculum design, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as serving as an external advisor for curriculum development at other institutions.

I am a member of the editorial board for The Journal of Gaskell Studies and am a member of the reviews team for the Review of the Pre-Raphaelite Society. In 2019, I established the research group British Narrative and Genre painting 1750-1870, a subgroup of the British Art Network (run by Tate and the Paul Mellon Centre for British Art).
