I am particularly interested in the links between physical activity, fitness, body composition and cardiometabolic health in children. I undertook a BSc (hons) in Sports Science (Exercise and Health) at Liverpool John Moores University (2003-2006) and I have recently completed my PhD at Liverpool John Moores University (2009-2012) titled: “Cardiometabolic risk in 10 to 11 year old children: The impacts of physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition and lifestyle education.” The main project of the thesis was the CHANGE! (Children’s Health Activity and Nutrition: Get Educated!) Project, a curriculum based physical activity and healthy eating intervention in Wigan primary schools. Another project included in the thesis was in collaboration with Alder Hey children’s hospital which investigated both inflammatory markers and non-invasive risk markers of cardiometabolic disease in 10 to 11 year children in Liverpool. Other research projects I have undertaken include an investigation into the impacts of a strength training intervention on cardiac structure and function and cardiorespiratory fitness in 9 to 11 year old children in collaboration with Glyndwr University, an audit of physical activity programmes in the North West of England on behalf of Sport England and the Department of Health and a walking project STEPs (Start to Exercise using Pedometers) on behalf of Mersey Travel and TravelWise.
