Libby's story

Liverpool Hope student Libby shares her story

Clearing wasn’t my ‘Plan A’, but it led me right where I needed to be thanks to Liverpool Hope.

When Libby Ellis was 17, life took an unexpected turn. She was diagnosed with a brain tumour just before her A-levels and was placed on strong medication that came with some unwanted side effects. As results season approached, Libby found herself in hospital again.

Despite the challenges facing her, Libby was still keen to pursue her ambitions and didn’t give up on her dream of going to university. Libby found her path through Clearing, a UCAS-led initiative that gives people a chance to apply to university after A-level results day if there is availability.

On her experience, Libby said: “After everything, I just needed to find a university that saw me as an individual. I rang Liverpool Hope University through Clearing and something clicked immediately. The team was genuine, warm and encouraging. That conversation motivated me to keep going.”

Libby accepted a place on the Law and Marketing combined course - a decision that brought together her passion for justice and her fascination with how people think and behave in a business world.

“I've faced a lot of injustices growing up. Studying law wasn’t just an interest - it was something I needed to understand. Marketing, on the other hand, was a subject I loved at A Levels. It let me explore the psychology behind decisions, communication and strategy. I didn't want to close any doors.”

From day one, she found Hope to be exactly what she needed, recalling one of her memories of a BBQ at her halls of residence that brought people together, making her feel instantly at home thanks to the kindness she experienced. “I felt instantly at home. Everyone was just...kind.”

That kindness wasn’t a one-off. It became a defining part of her student experience. Lecturers knew her name, support staff always had time, and fellow students looked out for each other. But for Libby, some of the most meaningful moments happened away from the lecture halls.

“I loved Monday lunches at the campus chaplaincy. I’ve probably tried more kinds of soup than I ever thought existed! But more than the food, it was the feeling. People took time to slow down and connect. There were students from all courses and backgrounds, and somehow, we all found common ground over bread and homemade soup. It made the university feel like a little village tucked inside a big city.”

Now, looking back on her journey from hospital wards to graduation gowns, Libby sees how far she’s come. Now, thinking back on everything she’s been through, Libby says it wasn’t the path she expected, but it turned out to be the right one.

Graduating this summer, Libby has already secured full-time work at a local Liverpool law firm, where she’s looking forward to continuing to learn and grow. She plans to take her next steps toward professional legal qualifications in the future.

“When I think about where I started, it’s surreal—but in the best way. Clearing gave me a second chance, and Hope gave me the space to become someone I’m proud of. I’m not done yet, but I’m finally on the path I was meant to be on all along.”
