Liverpool Hope University marks a significant milestone with the formal inauguration of Professor Penny Haughan as its Vice-Chancellor and Rector.
The ceremony, held at the University’s Hope Park campus on May 6, brought together colleagues, partners, and members of the wider community and Liverpool City Region to celebrate the beginning of her leadership at a pivotal moment for the institution.
Professor Haughan, who officially assumed the role in April 2026, will guide Liverpool Hope University through the next phase of its strategic development, including the delivery of its ambitious plan through to 2028. Her inauguration not only recognises her appointment but also her longstanding commitment to the institution and its future.
With more than three decades of service at Liverpool Hope, Professor Haughan has played a central role in shaping the University’s academic direction and student experience. Her recent conferment of a professorship further recognises her significant contribution to higher education, leadership, and scholarship.
Mrs Jane Beever, Chair of Council, said: “This inauguration is both a celebration and a statement of intent. Professor Haughan brings deep institutional knowledge, a passion for academic excellence, and a strong commitment to our students and community. Council is confident in her leadership as we continue to strengthen Liverpool Hope’s position and impact in the years ahead.”
Prior to becoming Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haughan served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, where she led major initiatives including the University’s Teaching Excellence Framework submission and contributed to consistently strong National Student Survey outcomes of which Liverpool Hope was ranked top in the North West across a number of areas in the latest results. She has been a leading advocate for student voice and has championed initiatives such as the Women in Leadership programme.
Her earlier roles include Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Life and Learning, where she helped steer the University through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as Dean of Students and Dean of Sciences and Social Sciences. She was also part of the senior leadership team during the University’s transition to full university status in 2005. Professor Haughan began her career at Liverpool Hope in 1995 as a lecturer in biology.
Beyond the University, she contributes to the wider education sector through governance roles, including positions on the boards of Ravensbourne University London, Wirral Met College, and a primary school in Warrington.
Speaking at the inauguration, Professor Haughan said: “It is a great privilege to be formally inaugurated as Vice-Chancellor of Liverpool Hope University. This institution has been central to my professional life, and I am proud to lead a community defined by its commitment to excellence, inclusion, and opportunity.
“As we look to the future, our focus remains on delivering outstanding teaching, impactful research, and a student experience that empowers individuals to thrive. I look forward to working with colleagues, students, and partners as we continue to build on our strengths and shape the next chapter of Liverpool Hope’s story.”
The inauguration ceremony underscores Liverpool Hope University’s ongoing commitment to education that transforms lives, social justice, and research that benefits the city region and beyond.
