An international leader in higher education has been awarded an honorary degree from Liverpool Hope University.

Dr Carolyn Bishop received the Doctor of Education (D.Ed) honoris causa, in recognition of her distinguished 25-year career as President of the Consortium for Global Education (CGE), a non-profit organisation which champions the internationalisation of higher education.

She was recognised at a graduation ceremony held at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on Wednesday 19 July.

The CGE supports more than 40 member universities in the USA and ten further countries with international collaboration, boasting partnerships with more than 300 overseas institutions across 90 nations.

Dr Bishop was appointed President in 1997 and has since led on the development of overseas study programmes for students, as well as creating opportunities for academics to teach, lecture or conduct research abroad.

Under her stewardship, CGE has earned a reputation for excellence, quality academic experiences and integration of faith and learning, which has been recognised by global leaders at government, institution, and community levels.

“I am delighted to receive an honorary doctorate from Liverpool Hope University,” said Dr Bishop.

“In working with the University’s outstanding leaders and staff since 2013 and observing the quality of learning provided for students, I deem this recognition as a very high honour and will cherish becoming an official member of Liverpool Hope University family.

“I recognise and respect Liverpool Hope as a globally focused university with values of educational excellence and a spirit of hope toward meaningful collaboration that benefits their campus programs and all their partnership activities around the world.”

Liverpool Hope University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Claire Ozanne, added: “Dr Bishop has made an outstanding contribution to higher education around the world over the course of her 25-years at the helm of the Consortium for Global Education (CGE).

“Under her leadership, the CGE has helped its member institutions develop hundreds of mutually beneficial partnerships, creating valuable learning and teaching opportunities for students and staff in the United States and beyond.

“In working with the CGE to establish our Maymester programme, and to create study abroad opportunities for our students, we have witnessed first-hand Carolyn’s inspirational ideas about international higher education and we are proud to be able to recognise her with this richly deserved honorary degree.”

Liverpool Hope's honorary degrees recognise those who have achieved excellence in their chosen field and whose work and contribution to society aligns closely to the University's mission, values and aims.
