Hope Apprentice takes on race to support bereaved children

fundraising group

Liverpool Hope University is celebrating the incredible fundraising effort of Youth Worker Degree Apprentice, Ryan Hardy, who took on a monumental challenge to support children bereaved by suicide.

Sponsored by his employer, the LFC Foundation, Ryan participated in Alfie's Squad's 'Race for a Reason,' a challenging, 'Race Across The World' style trek from Anfield Stadium all the way to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge ground.

Ryan’s motivation for tackling the daunting race alongside his teammate was to shine a spotlight on Alfie’s Squad, the UK's only charity providing vital face-to-face peer support for children and young people who have lost a loved one to suicide.

Drawing on his experience supporting young people through the LFC Foundation, Ryan explained why the cause is so close to his heart: "I’ve been involved with Alfie’s Squad through the LFC Foundation, visiting sessions and supporting young people, so the cause really means a lot to me. Getting involved in this challenge felt like a great way to help spread the word and show that the kind of support they offer is needed nationwide."

The 'Race for a Reason' tested Ryan’s physical and mental limits. Despite setbacks, the overall experience was overwhelmingly positive.

Ryan shared that the best part of the challenge was rediscovering the power of human connection, adding: "It reminded me that there are good people out there who genuinely care. The conversations we had and the support we received along the way were unreal. It definitely restored a bit of faith in humanity."

Ryan and his team mate Gary have raised almost £1,000 for the charity. If you’d like to help get them over the £1,000 target and support their amazing cause, there is still time to donate. Visit their fundraising page for details.
