British Science Week got off to a hopping start at Hope as the Easter Bunny led people on a wild goose chase across campus.
Senior Lecturer Carl Larsen demonstrated the science behind radio telemetry, using a radio transmitter and receiver to track down a human-sized bunny that was hiding on campus.
Earlier in the day, there were demonstrations and interactive sessions where visitors had the opportunity to see nutrition equipment in action and undergo Health MOTs.
The week-long celebrations were officially launched by Vice Chancellor Professor Pillay, who welcomed school children, students and members of the public to the University’s new £8.5 million Health Sciences Building.
A host of free family activities will be taking place in the building and within the University grounds throughout British Science Week (14th – 18th March).
Highlights include a falconry display, an animal encounters display, a family bat tracking evening and a day-long drop-in Lecturethon on Tuesday 15th March.
Carl Larsen, Senior Lecturer in Biology, said: “We have put our British Science Week programme together with the whole family in mind. We want to get as many people as possible excited about Science and show how it is part of our everyday life.”
The power of the human brain will be the focus of a series of lectures presented by staff from the University’s Faculty of Science, and the event will also be an opportunity to raise money for The Brain Charity.
There will also be robot demonstrations, screenings of modern and classic Sci Fi films and talks from bioscientists, computer scientists, nutritionists, psychologists and sports scientists.
