Athletes, coaches and community groups will be celebrated at a prestigious sports awards hosted by Liverpool Hope University next week.

The Liverpool Sport and Physical Activity Awards was first set up in 2018 by Liverpool Sports Forum in conjunction with Liverpool City Council.

It seeks to recognise the talented youngsters, coaches, and institutions - as well as the dedicated volunteers - who make Liverpool’s sports clubs tick.

And when the awards take place at Hope Park on Monday March 9th, it’ll see individuals picking up prizes in categories like ‘Club of the Year’, ‘Lifetime Achiever’ and ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’.

Shortlisted Nominees come from a range of community clubs and organisations, including the LFC Foundation, North West Spirit Taekwondo, as well as the Sunflowers Cancer Support Centre, in Dingle.

And visiting dignitaries include the Lord Mayor Anna Rothery, Deputy Mayor Wendy Simon and Tom Douglas, director at MSP - formerly known as the ‘Merseyside Sports Partnership’.

Organiser John Farrell said: “The awards will recognise talented young athletes, along with coaches, community groups, lifetime achievers and volunteers who commit to the community and sports clubs environment within Liverpool.

“A number of young athletes will also receive a bursary to assist them with costs associated with achieving national selection.”

Professor Omid Khaiyat, Head of Liverpool Hope University's School of Health Sciences, said the awards illustrated the University’s commitment to sporting initiatives in the city.

He added: “We’re delighted to be able to host the Liverpool Sport and Physical Activity Awards, which will applaud those talented individuals who are excelling in their athletic discipline, as well the people who’ve made their journeys possible.

“Liverpool Hope University has been a stakeholder in City Council programmes such as the ‘Active Well-being Initiative' and ‘Active Liverpool City’.

“And we want to continue to make a meaningful contribution to health and wellbeing across the city.”
