Liverpool Hope’s Gaelic football team have become the first-ever British university team to win the All-Ireland Corn na MacLeinn trophy.

Emotions were running high as the team secured a victory against Magee College in the final at Trinity Gaelic Athletic Association’s ground in Ireland. Liverpool Hope took the win comfortably in the second half, with a final score line of 2-14 to 1-08 to take home the title.

Team Captain Conor Boyle said: “There seems to be a view held by many people in Ireland that the British University GAA is not much of a spectacle. However, this year we have put the stereotypes to bed. We have silenced a lot of critics here in England and back home in Ireland, and it’s such a good feeling to finally have an All-Ireland trophy back at Hope Park. I hope the boys can keep this success afloat over the next few years.

“I am now in my fourth and final year at Hope, and it has taken me the four years to finally win a medal at an All-Ireland level. I have a few British Championships and leagues behind me but nothing thus far compares to this. I suppose it's a fitting way for myself and the other final years/postgraduates to leave Hope. Winning this tournament for many of our lads will be the highlight of their footballing careers. It is not often you can say that you have an All-Ireland medal with your university in your back pocket.

“I would like to thank our University and Students’ Union for their support in terms of finances and travel. The boys themselves, as well as the ladies’ GAA society and of course our friends, families, clubs and supporters, who travelled to Dublin at the weekend to support us and get us over the line.”

The 2011/12 campaign saw Liverpool Hope reach the division two Trench Cup final however, the team was beaten by this year’s hosts Trinity College.
