Meet Hope's Premier League Soccer Star

Meet the Liverpool Hope student with the world at her feet - a talented footballer who has wowed fans in the Scottish Women's Premier League.

Erin Meharry is a third year undergraduate at Hope studying Sport & Physical Education combined with Education.

But what her classmates might not know is that Erin, 20, has also played soccer at a semi-professional standard and still dreams of a career on the grass.

Erin, from South Lanarkshire, started playing football as a youngster when spurred-on by her older brothers.

And she ended up pulling on the famous jerseys of Rangers W.F.C and Glasgow Girls & Women FC before she even arrived in Merseyside.

It was for Glasgow Girls & Women FC that Erin made a senior first team appearance, with the team plying its trade in the Scottish Women's Premier League 2, the second tier of the women’s footballing pyramid in Scotland.

She says: “I started playing football when I was around seven or eight years old, and I just never stopped. I signed for Rangers when I was around 16 and then I moved to Premier League football when I was 17.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have a couple of first-team appearances for Glasgow Girls & Women FC in the Scottish Women's Premier League 2.

“And the goal for me is to resume playing football at the highest level when I return home after completing my studies here at Hope. It’s really exciting.”

While Erin - who plays as a right back or right winger - has pressed ‘pause’ on her involvement with Scottish football, she’s Vice Captain of Hope’s Women's Football Team and also plays for local side Mossley Hill Ladies FC.

Hope’s Women's Football Team have just won the league title as ‘invincibles’, not losing a single match.

And Erin’s achievements have not gone unnoticed.

She’s been the recipient of a Sports Related Performance Scholarship from Hope, which provides her with a bursary of £1,000 each academic year.

Besides football, another reason Erin was successful in her application for that scholarship is that she was also the British Champion for the 100m and 200m sprints during her time with the Army Cadets in 2019.

She laughs: “Throughout my football playing career I’ve always been put on the wing, as I’m quite fast and no-one can catch me!

“And my time with the Army Cadets really helped me to secure the Hope Sports Related Performance Scholarship, for which I’m really, really grateful.”

The way that the Scottish Women's Premier League operates right now, most top-flight players still need to have a job in order to balance the books.

For Rangers fan Erin, she’s eying up a profession as a sports psychologist to run alongside her playing career.

She adds: “As much as I would love to make football my full-time job, I think I’ll always need another profession to fall back on, which is why I want to work with top level footballers as a sports psychologist.

“But I don’t plan to quit playing any time soon. I currently play football five times a week and I won’t just drop it just because I can’t earn a living from being on the pitch.”

Speaking about her experience of being in Liverpool, Erin adds: “I’ve loved my time at Hope. I’ve never had a single issue at the university whatsoever - it’s been such a smooth ride. If someone had told me it would be like this, I wouldn’t have believed them.”
