Dreams of being a barrister led international student Sarah Nakintende to Liverpool Hope University from her hometown in Uganda.
Studying Law with a foundation year, Sarah talks of how she’s been supported on her journey by the University, saying, “I was home-schooled, and also the education system generally is very different where I am from, so moving to another city was daunting but exciting. It has taken some adjustment but I just knew as soon as I stepped foot on campus that this is where I belonged. The support I have received along the way has been incredible. For any student, starting university is a big step and for me to move to a different country was huge but I have always felt so at home at Hope.”
Sarah has made the most of the opportunities that have come her way so far, and is an active member of the Afro-Caribbean Society and is keen to take up dance too. Sarah added, “I have really tried to make the most of my time here and have thrown myself into my studies but also the social side of being a student. I have a diverse friendship group and really enjoy everything that Liverpool has to offer, from the nightlife to the wonderful green spaces around campus. Getting out and walking in these leafy suburbs and parks is a great way to unwind and switch off from studying.”
Talking of her future ambitions, Sarah is set on a career in law, eventually wanting to work as a barrister. It’s this determination to succeed that keeps her grounded while studying. Sarah is also considering further study at Liverpool Hope at postgraduate level.
“The locals are so friendly and I felt welcomed into Liverpool from my very first visit. I remember coming to see the campus for the first time with my father and I knew instantly that I would study here. The day that I received my offer letter is one that I will always remember.
“Studying my chosen subject with a foundation year has offered me a great grounding in the area, and has enabled me to adjust to a new education system very seamlessly. My class sizes are often small and my lecturers and tutors are always on hand to offer support. I try to manage my time and set myself study days, meaning that I can find the balance of work and also downtime.”
